Take part in Old World Wisconsin's History on the Move outreach initiative. Presentations meet academic standards for social studies instruction and can be adapted to fit your curriculum objectives for teaching community, culture, heritage or immigration. Bring history to your school by booking one of the following traveling programs:
- Coming to America
Decide whether you would stay or move far away as you pack a 19th-century trunk. Compare the immigrant experience of people in the past with the challenges facing today's immigrants.
- From Sheep to Sweater
This unit is all about wool and the way people use it. For younger grades, a storytelling sheep shares a humorous tale. For older grades, an excerpt by Laura Ingalls Wilder will introduce students to the many uses of wool.
- Old Fashioned Games
Get up and get moving! Your video game-savvy students of the 21st century will enjoy trying the toys, puzzles and games that their great-grandparents used to own.
- History in a Box
Don't know where to begin? Then this unit is for you. Experiment with unusual artifacts as you try to guess their purpose. Learn how we "do" history at Old World Wisconsin and how kids can become historians at home.
- A Runaway Slave's Story
A costumed storyteller shares all the neighborhood news, including the tale of a family of former slaves who made a new life in Wisconsin. Learn how this family overcame many challenges and sent their daughter to college.
- Program Cost and Time Requirements
Each presentation runs between 45 minutes and one hour. The cost is $75 for one 25-member classroom and $50 for each additional classroom (schools more than 30 miles from Old World Wisconsin add 76 cents per additional mile).
